F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby - Nick Carraways Self-Interest

Nick's Self-Interest in The Great Gatsby      Ã‚   In his novel The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald portrays a world filled with rich societal happenings and love affairs. His main character, Gatsby, is flamboyant, pompous, and only cares about impressing the love of his life, Daisy Buchanan. Nick is Fitzgerald's narrator for the story, and is a curious choice as a narrator because he is of a different class and almost a different world than Gatsby and most of the other characters in the book. Nick relates the plot to the reader as a member of Gatsby's circle, yet he expresses repeatedly his dislike for the man. Nick cannot relate to Gatsby because of their fundamental personality differences. Moreover, he disapproves of Gatsby's desire to impress Daisy at all costs. However, Nick continues to follow Gatsby because by doing so he can ensure his relationship with Jordan, a celebrity socialite, and because, in a perverse way, Nick can use Gatsby to bolster his own self-esteem.    Nick expresses his opinion about Gatsby quite clearly: "I disapproved of him from beginning to end" (162). However, he makes this remark at the end of the novel and actually does like Gatsby when he first meets him. "I could see nothing sinister about him" (54). Nick's image of Gatsby only begins to be tainted once he learns of his relationship with Daisy. Nick's dislike does not stem from jealousy; it comes from the fact that Gatsby shapes his life around what Daisy wants. Nick does not see Gatsby as a real person, only as an image set out to please Daisy and conform to what she desires. The epigraph of the novel states:    Then wear the gold hat, if that will move her; If you can bounce high, bounce for her too, ... ...al element of life, and thus finds Gatsby foolish as he devotes his life to pleasing Daisy. However, Nick links himself with Gatsby so that he can gain in social status and self-regard. Nick wants to be respected, and Jordan gives him much more respect after he becomes Gatsby's friend. Thus Nick keeps up the friendship to benefit his love life. He also gains self-assurance because he sees himself as Gatsby's only "true friend". Thus it is Nick's selfishness that causes him to develop a rapport with Gatsby even though Gatsby "represented everything for which I [Nick] have an unaffected scorn" (6). Gatsby becomes merely an object, though he is the character that gives his name to the title of the novel. Gatsby is only "great" relative to Nick's self-interest. Work Cited Fitzgerald, F. Economic Impact On The Company - 1071 Words

Economic Impact: Often in cases of bid rigging the amount of money that the company loses is often significantly higher than the if the contract had be awarded to other firms. Given the number and costs of the change orders involved with this case, led to the final construction costs being almost $82,000 over the average of all bids from other construction firms, resulting in TBB losing a great deal of money for the quality of the work performed. Of this $82,000, $62,893 was withdrawn by Larkin Construction in the form of cash. A reasonable assumption with this money is that it was dispersed to parties involved in the bid rigging scheme. Cash would be used (as opposed to ACH transfers) to conceal who benefitted from the bid rigging scheme. These payouts ultimately are what increased the total construction costs, as the increased costs are to cover kickbacks to those involved in the scheme. The Above Picture Is Drawn By Alan Turcotte - 1922 Words

The above picture is drawn by Alan Turcotte in 1997 in appreciation for receiving a Brander Bronze Roller from James Turner. From his early childhood, James was always fascinated by reproducing something he had liked. He was always curious about animal breeding and tried different things to learn the ropes at a time when there were not many genetic books available to the public. I think people like James live for that challenging feeling of satisfaction. If someone would dare to tell him, â€Å"You can’t do that! That’s not possible!† he would at least try to see if it was actually possible. When James was told that there could not be dual-purpose Rollers—birds with top quality performance and variety of exotic colors—he decided to challenge that idea. â€Å"When I first started to do the color projects, people made remarks that I was wasting my time because I could never get them to spin. But some of them said if I ever make them spin, they would want one. They didn’t mind giving me a hard time and laughing at me, but they all wanted one if I could make them spin . When I first started with my genetic projects, nobody took them seriously,† said James. He soon realized he could breed any color he wanted into his performing birds and make them spin just as well as the others. Surely many men before him had tried this, and after a few generations of breeding, the conclusion was that it couldn’t be done. Unlike his predecessors with their half-hearted efforts, James used scientific

Leader Profiling †Leadership †Golda Meir Free Essays

Golda Meir’s Determination, loyalty, integrity and conscientiousness were major leadership traits that will always be respected in the Jewish community. She was described as the â€Å"Iron Lady† of  Israeli politics  years before the term became associated with British prime minister  Margaret Thatcher. Former prime minister  David Ben-Gurion  used to call Meir â€Å"the best man in the government†; * Determination: the desire to get the job done (Northouse, p. We will write a custom essay sample on Leader Profiling – Leadership – Golda Meir or any similar topic only for you Order Now 25) Golda Meir was determined to overachieve and protect Israel’s interests throughout her life, even throughout her childhood she organized a fund raisers to pay for her classmates’ books. Another display of determination was entering politics, a male dominated field, and being praised by her subordinates for her decisions. She was determined to lead a change and always sought after leadership positions. â€Å"Although she was born in Russia and educated in the United States, where she trained as a teacher, she arrived in Palestine when she was in her twenties and lived on a kibbutz. She immediately became active in the newly-formed Histadrut trade union movement† (Butt, 1998) * Loyalty – Golda Meir’s loyalty to Israel cannot be questioned. With her family fleeing Russia where she was born in 1898, to begin a new life in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There she developed a passionate commitment to form a Jewish state. She worked tirelessly by raising money and used her gifts of charm and oratory to promote the cause of an independent Jewish state. * Integrity – the quality of honesty and trustworthiness. (Northouse, p. 25) Golda Meir saw integrity as the currency of Israel’s survival (Burkett, 2008). The way Golda spoke with her followers and involved them in decision making built a high level of trust and honesty within the Israeli government. Meir led by example; she practiced the same morals and beliefs that she preached. * Conscientiousness – the tendency to be thorough, organized, controlled, dependable, and decisive (Northouse, p. 27). Golda Meir’s conscientiousness was shown during her academic career, where she graduated as valedictorian. Moreover she has shown her control, dependability, and hard work On May 10, 1948, four days before the official establishment of the state, Meir traveled to  Amman  disguised as an Arab woman for a secret meeting with  King of  Transjordan  at which she urged him not to join the other Arab countries in attacking the Jews. Golda Meir had many of the traits associated with a transformational leader, such as idealized influence, charisma, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration. Golda Meir led by the rule of dedication to her country and her personal concern for all people are legendary. Whatever Golda Meir did, she did for the people, always listened to her followers and wasn’t intolerant of opposing views, she considered all options and whenever she had to make a decision she consulted with her team. Since Israel was established to be a Jewish state, she worked to improve the lives of her people; she created a vision for the young state to ensure that Jews across the world learned of her vision and take the necessary steps to achieve it. Meir was the leader Israel needed in a time of crisis, she was charismatic with exceptional rhetoric skills, and both attributes are crucial to political leaders. â€Å"†¦transformational leadership results in people feeling better about themselves and their contributions to the greater common goal† (Northouse, p. 00) Indeed Jews across the world migrated to Israel in hopes of living in Golda Meir’s overall vision of the state of Israel. Golda Meir’s ability to lead the people to their common goal while keeping a unified nation, not becoming power hungry, and always keeping what’s best for the country first, are the main goals and achievements of an ideal transformational leader.
